Front Porch University

Not a place, but a culture.

We strive to make a difference in the quality of life for those we serve. And as we work toward meeting their needs, we want to be the best we can be. So we seek excellence not just in what we do, but in who we are as people, and as organizations.

It’s this pursuit of service excellence that inspired Front Porch University, an entity without walls that enables us to share best practices, responsibility, and accountability, wherever we are, in order to realize the best in each of us.

Leadership College

Part of Front Porch University, Front Porch Leadership College is designed to meet leadership training needs for managers and supervisors. A core course is Front Porch Essentials—where the orientation provides new Front Porch leader-managers with essential information for their success and the survival of Front Porch culture. Other learning opportunities include Skills Up For Leaders! offering periodic workshops to develop leadership skills, and DiSC Teamwork and Conflict Resolution workshops for managers, directors, and executives. Front Porch University and Leadership College is ever evolving, with an eye to the future as we design ongoing curriculum for all levels of leadership. A culture of continuous learning comes back to benefit our residents with employees that are more confident, more responsible, and more sensitive to their needs today and in the future. And nowhere is this transformation more powerful than with our 5-STAR College.

5-STAR College

What starts as a two-day training program regularly ends up changing the lives of each of its participants. Every year, we teach service excellence concepts to more than 60 of our line staff employees who in turn teach them to the rest of the organization. We select these service “STARS” not because they need to improve their skills, but because they have demonstrated the potential to excel and become leaders. They spend two days of intensive off-site training and learn much more than customer service.

Create meaning–for yourself and others.

This action seemed immediately to calm them both, as the joy of the Captain was converted into resentment, and the wrath of Madame Duval into fear: for he put his hands upon her shoulders, and gave her so violent a shake, that she screamed out for help; assuring her, at the same time, that if she had been one ounce less old, or less ugly, she should have had it all returned in her own face.

How exquisite life had once been! How gorgeous in its pomp and decoration! Even to read of the luxury of the dead was wonderful.

Then he turned his attention to embroideries and to the tapestries that performed the office of frescoes in the chill rooms of the northern nations of Europe. As he investigated the subject–and he always had an extraordinary faculty of becoming absolutely absorbed for the moment in whatever he took up–he was almost saddened by the reflection of the ruin that time brought on beautiful and wonderful things.

“And now I will show you what is really a very interesting study, Mr. Windibank,” Holmes continued. “I think of writing another little monograph some of these days on the typewriter and its relation to crime. It is a subject to which I have devoted some little attention. I have here four letters which purport to come from the missing man. They are all typewritten. In each case, not only are the ‘e’s’ slurred and the ‘r’s’ tailless, but you will observe, if you care to use my magnifying lens, that the fourteen other characteristics to which I have alluded are there as well.”

Mr. Windibank sprang out of his chair and picked up his hat. “I cannot waste time over this sort of fantastic talk, Mr. Holmes,” he said. “If you can catch the man, catch him, and let me know when you have done it.”

When he found this, he changed the subject, and talked of public places, and public performers; but he soon discovered that I was totally ignorant of them.

He then, very ingeniously, turned the discourse to the amusements and occupations of the country.

It now struck me that he was resolved to try whether or not I was capable of talking upon any subject. This put so great a restraint upon my thoughts, that I was unable to go further than a monosyllable, and not ever so far, when I could possibly avoid it.

We were sitting in this manner, he conversing with all gaiety, I looking down with all foolishness, when that fop who had first asked me to dance, with a most ridiculous solemnity approached, and, after a profound bow or two, said, “I humbly beg pardon, Madam,-and of you too, my Lord,-for breaking in upon such agreeable conversation-which must, doubtless, be more delectable-than what I have the honour to offer-but-“

Here’s another line.

“‘That’s all right,’ said he, coming back. ‘I know that clerks are sometimes curious as to their master’s affairs. Now we can talk in safety.’ He drew up his chair very close to mine and began to stare at me again with the same questioning and thoughtful look.

“A feeling of repulsion, and of something akin to fear had begun to rise within me at the strange antics of this fleshless man. Even my dread of losing a client could not restrain me from showing my impatience.

What are we?

“‘I beg that you will state your business, sir,’ said I; ‘my time is of value.’ Heaven forgive me for that last sentence, but the words came to my lips.

“‘How would fifty guineas for a night’s work suit you?’ he asked.

“‘Most admirably.’

“‘I say a night’s work, but an hour’s would be nearer the mark. I simply want your opinion about a hydraulic stamping machine which has got out of gear. If you show us what is wrong we shall soon set it right ourselves. What do you think of such a commission as that?’

Right on right on

The next day, came the news that the murder had not been overlooked, that the guilt of Hyde was patent to the world, and that the victim was a man high in public estimation. It was not only a crime, it had been a tragic folly. I think I was glad to know it; I think I was glad to have my better impulses thus buttressed and guarded by the terrors of the scaffold. Jekyll was now my city of refuge; let but Hyde peep out an instant, and the hands of all men would be raised to take and slay him.

Jekyll had more than a father’s interest; Hyde had more than a son’s indifference. To cast in my lot with Jekyll, was to die to those appetites which I had long secretly indulged and had of late begun to pamper. To cast it in with Hyde, was to die to a thousand interests and aspirations, and to become, at a blow and forever, despised and friendless.

Had she known her sister sought to tear her from such prospects and such realities as these, what would have been her sensations? They could have been understood only by her mother, who might have felt nearly the same. Lydia’s going to Brighton was all that consoled her for her melancholy conviction of her husband’s never intending to go there himself.
