Estela Cruz Celebrates 17 Years of Service at Vista del Monte, Highlighting Community Bonds and Lifelong Learning

Estela Cruz has worked at Vista del Monte for 17 years, nearly a third of the community’s history. She first started in the housekeeping department and then transferred to the dining department after two years.

“I made the switch because I wanted to interact more with the residents. It’s something I really enjoy,” she explained. Now, after fifteen years in dining, Estela is grateful for the growth she has experienced. “There are a lot of opportunities for improving upon your strengths.”

A native Spanish speaker, Estela has been able to improve her English skills at Vista del Monte. “When I started, I didn’t know any English, but now I speak a little more.” And, since lifelong learning is celebrated at the community, the language exchange goes both ways. Residents practice their Spanish with her by exchanging greetings at mealtimes.

One thing that makes Estela’s workplace unique is her relationship with her coworkers. “I like helping new employees by teaching them what I’ve learned in all my years here,” she said. She values communication and trying to get along as coworkers and as friends, creating a positive work environment for all.

Over the years, Estela has experienced changes that have impacted her personally and professionally. One of her favorite memories is of her daughter receiving a scholarship from the Vista del Monte Employee Scholarship Fund. Her daughter used the scholarship to continue her studies at UCSB. She has since graduated and is giving back to the community through her work in the Santa Barbara Police Department.

One notable professional change at the community is the renovations that were made to the dining room starting in 2021. “When they renovated the dining room, we had to bring the food in from outside. Even though service took a little bit longer, the residents were patient.” she recounted. Now that construction has been completed, they have enjoyed the benefits of al fresco dining thanks to the indoor-outdoor Parkview Lounge. “Barbecues are a special time. Residents are happier because they like eating outside.”

Ultimately, “what makes Vista special to me is the care I feel from the residents,” Estella said. “And my favorite part of working here is seeing the residents be satisfied with the service I provide.” It’s these types of connections that strengthen the tight-knit sense of community between residents and employees at Vista del Monte.
