The Impact of a Gift

When Bruce Watts moved to Sunny View in Cupertino, he found a great support system that became like a family. He wanted to support every aspect of the community, especially residents and staff, by making sure residents had the best experience possible. “His biggest and most proud moment was developing the Emergency ‘Grab and Go’ bags for residents,” Nelson Rodrigues, Sunny View executive director, remembers. The bags contain essentials one would need in an emergency, so they can be grabbed on the way out the door.

“Bruce was instrumental in helping develop the right components of the ‘ingredients’ of the bag,” Nelson says. Bruce made a donation to supply bags to all current residents, and made a provision in his estate that will enable Sunny View to provide future residents with a bag as well.

“That is Bruce in a nutshell: he always wanted to do the best for residents,” said Bill Penrod, who served as Sunny View’s development director for 10 years. “Whether it was technology to improve the lives of residents, or special treats for the staff to help them feel appreciated, his intent was to make sure Sunny View was the best possible place to be.”
