On September 3rd, Familiar Touch, a “coming of old age” film made in collaboration with the residents and staff of Villa Gardens Continuing Care Retirement Community, had its premiere at the Venice Film Festival Orizzonti Competition, winning Best Debut Film, Best Director and Best Actress. In Variety, director Sarah Friedland is quoted, saying, “We want to replicate the intergenerational method of how we shot this film. We facilitated a filmmaking workshop for residents at a real assisted living facility called Villa Gardens, encouraging them to make their own films. Later, they joined our cast and crew.” In McKnights, residents and staff share their experience of taking part in the filmmaking process.
